Is a water bed good or bad for the back?

There are misconceptions about the use of a water bed, including the myth that it does not provide the correct support for the sleepers back. This may have had an element of truth during the early days of waterbeds, but modern soft side waterbeds in Houston TX are equal to or better than conventional mattresses, although there are some experts in the medical field who still do not recommend them.

The earliest waterbeds did not have equally support to conventional coil spring mattresses of the day. It was felt that the original waterbeds did not provide adequate support for the lumbar region and did not hold the back in the correct position when prone. The medical experts at the time were of the opinion that long term use of a waterbed would add to rather than eliminate back problems.

The beds that are being produced today; either the hard side or soft side waterbeds in Houston TX are very different, and they are just as supportive, if not more so, than modern coil spring construction mattresses. The heavy vinyl bladder is either supported within a frame or held upright due to its design, the baffles and water coils allow for any motion the owner chooses; full wave, semi or no wave action at all. Water is very supportive but allows for give that harder mattresses do not; this is especially noticeable on the pressure points.

There are critics of even the modern waterbeds. These people are of the opinion that lower back of the sleeper can sink to low, in turn creating a problem for the entire back. They use as an analogy a bean bag saying that if the person sits to long in this type of chair the lack of support puts undue stress on the joints and vertebra. Most modern, high quality water beds do not have the give that a bean bad does.

A wonderful addition to a water bed is heat and cooling. Many waterbeds can heat up to a temperature which can be considered therapeutic, this helps to relax all the muscles of the entire back, neck and shoulder region equally. As the water bed compresses it can provide equal comfort on the natural pressure points that any orthopedic bed can provide. It may be a bit of a wild ride mounting a full wave waterbed but once the sleeping position has been set, look forward to a great sleep.
