Gambrills Veterinary Center: Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe this Winter

Spread the love

Winter is fast approaching and it is a time when the Gambrills Veterinary Center sees many dogs come in for treatment. Many pet parents don’t seem to realize that their pet’s fur is not impenetrable. Yes, your dog has fur, but that does not mean that the frigid winter cold and wind can’t make your dog sick or cause them to freeze to death before you realize what is happening. A good rule of thumb to remember is if it is too cold for you to be outside, then it is too cold for your pet to be outside as well.

Below you will find some tips for keeping your dog warm and safe this upcoming winter, so that you will not have to make a trip to Gambrills Veterinary Center for a reason that could have easily been prevented.

Keep Your Dog Indoors and Warm

The best thing to do when the snow if flying and the temperature drops is to stay inside and cuddle up in front of a roaring fire. The same holds true for your canine companion. You should keep your dog indoors with you where it is warm and cozy if possible.

Many pets are sensitive to the severe cold. If the wind chill is freezing, it will cut right through your pet’s fur, just as it cuts through your jacket when you are out in it.

Give Your Pet Plenty of Water

Pets who spend a lot of time outside in the winter months will use more energy to try to keep warm. You will want to keep their water and food dishes full, when they are out and about playing. Make sure to check the water bowl occasionally, just in case the water freezes. You should only let your pet stay out for a little while in the cold weather, and then bring them back inside where it is warm.

These are just a few tips for keeping your furry companion warm during the winter months. Remember if it is too cold for you to roam around outside, then it is probably too cold for them as well.
