Bay Area Tutoring a High School Student

by | Oct 10, 2013 | Education

Tutoring can be a hard business, especially if you are tutoring high school students. Many high school students who can benefit from bay area tutoring are embarrassed and hate asking for help. It often makes a teenager, who is already unsure of themselves, feel like they aren’t as good as other students, who do not need to be tutored. There are some tips however, on how to deal with tutoring a student in high school, read on to learn more.

The first thing you will need to do is get to know your student. Instead of walking into your first tutoring session and immediately opening the book, take the time to get to know the student; find out their likes and dislikes, so that they see you as a person, not just someone there to make them study something they don’t like to begin with.

Set goals by identifying the problems that the student is having with the classwork and homework. Don’t push too hard and be supportive to help the student overcome whatever anxiety they are dealing with from the course. Help your student to get organized, as every good tutor knows that organization is key to success, no matter what you are studying.

Go slowly, never get in a hurry to go to the next chapter. You are there to help the student learn, and this is not a race.  Master each and every objective before you move on to the next one. If you hurry and rush the student, you risk undoing whatever good you have already accomplished quickly.

Always, always give positive feedback. The self-confidence level of many teens that need tutoring is low to begin with and they may very well be embarrassed to be having you tutor them. Positive feedback can boost their confidence and help them to strive to do better work as well. Being a high school tutor is anything but an easy job, but it has tons of rewards attached to it, when you realize that you are helping the future of America, and doing a great job at it to boot.
