Early Rings

Men have been giving gifts to women for centuries. The presentation of an engagement ring, however, only dates back to the 13th century. The Greeks gave a “friendship” ring. The Romans used rings to indicate honorable intentions. Yet, it took Pope Innocent III (1160/61 – 16 July 1216) to formalize the betrothal (engagement) period in the year before his death. The term, Anglo-Saxon in origin, required proof of the groom’s honorable intentions. This resulted in the creation of designer engagement rings indicative of the status and financial capabilities of the groom and his family.

Few Diamond Designer Engagement Rings

While all engagement rings of this period can be defined as designer, not any held diamonds. In fact, many of these early designer engagement rings were simple bands. While some rings may have held gemstones, current historical evidence is not clear as to the extent of this practice. It is supposed, however, that sapphires were common since popular belief during the Crusades ascribed this gem with the ability to detect or indicate infidelity. It would fade in color is a spouse was unfaithful. Later, during the 14th and 15th centuries, sapphires became favored because they symbolized commitment, true love and veracity.

During this early period, common gems in engagement rings included:

*    Diamonds

*    Emeralds

*    Rubies

*    Sapphires

While sapphires dominated the designer engagement rings of the wealthy, diamonds made a strong impression once during this period. In 1477, Archduke Maximillian (1459–1519) commissioned an engagement ring for his betrothed Mary of Burgundy (1457–1482). It is the first diamond engagement ring on record.

Later Rings

During the following centuries, designer engagement rings remained popular with the wealthy. Although diamonds from Africa and Brazil grew more common during the 18th and 19th centuries, designers preferred to use emeralds, rubies in sapphires, believing, their rarity proved their value. During the Victorian era, different gems were solicited to create both simple and intricate designs set in gold. Designer engagement rings would even utilize gem stones to spell out romantic messages.

Engagement rings became more common during the 20th century. The custom had spread to include all classes of society. Anyone who could buy an engagement ring. While high-end designer engagement rings remained in the hands of the rich, simpler designs with opals and pearls replaced the rose-cut diamonds and sapphires of the Edwardian period (1900-1920) and contrasting gems of the Art Deco era (1920-1930).
