How to care for Travertine

Spread the love

Travertine is natural stone from the limestone family composed of calcium carbonate. A prime source for the material is near warm or hot springs where it is found in abundant deposits. It has been used since ancient times as a building material. Today it is most often used for kitchen and bathroom countertops and floors and is often the material of choice for bath surrounds and shower stalls. As it has similar properties to marble, a travertine tile sealer is a must-have product otherwise it will quickly become stained.

As with marble, the finish determines what sort of product is needed to maintain the quality and life of the stone. If the finish is honed it definitely must be treated with a travertine tile sealer or else it will stain and become dull. Let’s have a look at the best ways to clean, seal and protect your travertine tiles.

Check and seal

Sealing travertine tile is a must if it has been honed or tumbled. If you have travertine tile in your home check with the contractor or installer to ensure it has been sealed. If it is sealed, and it should be, then there is protection from aggressive spills such as wine, fruit juices or acidic drinks.

Immediate cleanup

Travertine is very sensitive to certain food stuffs; ketchup, tomato sauce, mustard etc. are all aggressive materials and must be cleaned up immediately with warm water and a travertine tile cleaning sealer product. Do not use any cleaning products that contain bleach, ammonia, acids and alkalis.

Dust mop

If the travertine tile in your home is used on the floor, dust it regularly and use a dry mop that has not been treated with any dust inhibiting chemicals. Wash the floor with warm water and a cleaning agent that has been formulated for travertine once a week. It is best not to use a vacuum as it can chip the material or scratch it.

Stubborn stains

If it is not possible to clean the liquid up when it was spilled you may find that a stain has set into the tile. The solution for this is to make a poultice from MB Stone Care travertine tile cleaning powder. Mix the powder with warm water and spread it over the stain and cover it with clear wrap. After several days the poultice will slowly draw the stain from the tile. Once the stain has been removed, wash and dry the area and buff with a soft cloth.

If you have buffed or tumbled travertine tile in your home, then you need to use a high quality travertine tile sealer to prevent the tile from staining. For quality products visit our profile at MB Stone Care & Supply.
