Revelation 21 Commentary

Spread the love

The last trumpet has sounded. The wars have ended. It is a new day and a new heaven and a new earth is entering from the heavens. The first heaven and the first earth are no more. As John views this phenomenon of Revelation 21, his description is that of beauty and you can hear the peace as he speaks. John calls the new city the holy city, New Jerusalem adorned as a bride. He hears the great voice of God as it is announced that the tabernacle of God is now with men and that He will dwell with them and they shall be His people and He will be their God. It is the time that all Christians live for. No matter what the differences may have been, they are forgotten now.

It’s a New Day

God, who sat on the throne, said that He is making all things new. It is the time when all tears will be wiped away and death will have no more sting. It is a time when there will be no pain as the former things will have passed away. A time when the Alpha and Omega will give of the fountain of the water of life to them that overcame and has inherited all things including eternal life. Revelation 21 summarizes life in the New Jerusalem, the triumphant church of God.

A Beautiful City

The city is described to John as descending from God, having the glory of God and the light was that of a precious stone. He talks about the walls of the city with twelve foundations named after the apostles. The gates were named after the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. Such care was taken in building the walls of the city and God spared no expense in the materials that He used. If the children of God could get a glimpse of the description of the city, they would not fret or have anxiety about money or the lack of it while they were here on this earth. God has always wanted heaven on earth for His children. There would be no doubt that God has it to give and wants to bring it here to is people as they are ambassadors of heaven.

Just picture it. The foundations of the walls are made of all manner of precious stones. Its twelve layers are made of stones from jasper to amethyst. The twelve gates are pearls and yes, the streets are made of gold that looks like transparent glass. There was no temple inside the city because the Lord God and the Lamb is the temple. There is no need for the sun or the moon because it is being lit by the glory of God and by the Lamb. Truly this beautiful city is for the redeemed of the Lord and they all should say so!
