What Is A Family Court?

Within the legal system a family court is one which is dedicated expressly to family law in Boise Idaho. The judge who oversees the court, along with the clerks and other court officers are all keenly aware of all aspects of family law. Family courts, especially in major metropolitan centers, help to take some of the strain off the already overburdened legal system by offering a space which is dedicated to family law matters; this gives other judges time to focus on other matters of importance.

Although there are minor variations in how a family court functions from one jurisdiction to another, as a general rule they focus on issues which pertain to family law which can range from the ugliness of divorce to the glee of an adoption. The bulk of the cases heard in a family court are related to marriage or rather the dissolution of it. Divorce, alimony, child issues such as custody and support are all heard in family courts. Family law in Boise Idaho also encompasses issues such as child neglect and abuse, foster care, guardianship’s and juvenile delinquency. Some family courts also are left to deal with cases involving domestic violence.

Family courts are most often found in cities and other urban areas where there is a preponderance of family legal issues compared to more rural environments. In a city there are many family law issues heard every week while in the rural communities there are fewer and as a result even family law is heard by the same judge that handles all cases.

In some cases a typical family court will work side by side with regional organizations dedicated to child and family advocacy. The regional child welfare department will normally have a close working relationship with family courts as they are responsible for bringing many cases in front of the judge.

Although courts that regularly deal with family law in Boise Idaho may be designed to be a little more “child friendly” this does not mean that courtroom etiquette is relaxed. Anyone who is involved with a case in family court is expected to treat the court and all the officials with the same respect that is expected in any other court. All witnesses will be sworn in prior to their testimony and anyone who fails to appear or performs any other act that is considered contemptuous will be treated as being in contempt of court. The decisions made in family courts, just like all courts, are legally binding.
